Mid-Week M.E.L.A: Game of Thrones – House Targaryen

Game of Thrones – House Targaryen has been edited by Nidhi Shah.

House Targaryen seems to be the centre of The Game of Thrones from the very first episode. And as the show advances, our love for Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, first of her name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and of the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, Mother of Dragons keeps growing. We have always hated the Mad King, Aerys Targaryen and her brother Viserys Targaryen. However, we have always loved Daenerys’ guts, her dragons: Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion named after Khal Drogo, Rhaegar and Viserys Targaryen, her brothers. And boy, did we rejoice learning that The Lord Commander, Jon Snow is now a Targaryen.

We are going to cover the house from head to toe. The book readers are familiar with the background of the house. As we all know, House Targaryen was the ruling house of The Seven Kingdoms until the Kingslayer, Jamie Lannister killed The Mad King to save the city from wildfire. Now the Mad King Aerys II was the son of Aegon V Targaryen, who also fathered Rhaella Targaryen, Mother of Daenerys, Viserys and Rhaegar. For those wondering, yes, Rhaella and Aerys were siblings, and yes, they fucked each other. That adds to the other sibling pair on the show. Also, if you did not notice already, Jon is the son of Rhaegar, which makes him the nephew of Daenerys.

So how did House Targaryen come into existence? You see, actually, Targaryens were simple village people living in Valyria. Valyria was then a kingdom of volcanoes, dungeons, and dragons. (See what I did there?) Now Valyria seemed to be very okay with the practice of polygamy and incest. Ah, that explains everything! But their doom was eventual with the eruption of the volcanoes. And the only ones to survive were the Targaryens. Targaryens or Dragonlords lived in the Dragonstone at that time. They were invulnerable to fire because of their constant exposure to the fires of the dragons.

Daenys Targaryen, the mother of Aegon Targaryen, the first Targaryen king, had a vision of the doom which led Aegon to the War of Conquest. At the end of the war, Aegon conquered all the seven kingdoms and unified them to one, which we now call Westeros. And since then, until Jamie killed the Mad King, Targaryens ruled over Westeros.

Jumping back to the present scenario, over the time it gets obvious why Daenerys could possibly win the Iron Throne. There is no match to her guts. The way she brings the unexpected turn of events is simply irresistible to praise. We all at a moment fell in love with the stronghold she has over her dragons. And adored the bond between them. I guess every one of us screamed with excitement when she took over the army of unsullied. The way she leaves Kraznys mo Nakloz startled by her Valerian assures you that only she possessed the power to handle the throne. Daenerys slowly conquers and crushes anyone who stands against her.

I am going to quote Daenerys, “I will take what is mine with fire and blood” because while it is nearly the most iconic thing the Mother of Dragons has said, we are all secretly hoping for this to be true.

Moreover, following the situation of the white walkers, it is clear that there is a strong need for the Dragons. As only four Valerian swords remain, dragons are a must to kill the white walkers. Not forgetting the recent disclosure of Jon being a Targaryen, it is understandable that the Targaryens are surely going to take over the throne. Also, who would not long for Jon to be the King? He has suffered enough, and as much as we like Daenerys, we love Commander Jon too. He has risen like a phoenix from every hardship, be it disapproval from his own family, excommunication, the death of his beloved ones, or his own death. We have loved Jon from the moment he joined the Night’s Watch.

Personally, I feel no one stands a chance against the House Targaryen. With their Dragons and their insight, Westeros needs Targaryens to vanquish the White Walkers once and for all. However, I cannot cover each and every perk of the house, but you can catch up with the show here.
