Mid-Week M.E.L.A: Game of Thrones – House Baratheon

Mid-Week M.E.L.A: Game of Thrones – House Baratheon has been edited by Riya Jhala.

They came, they conquered, they saw themselves get extinct bit by bit. That is the briefest description someone can give about House Baratheon of Storm’s End. Their slogan is “Ours is the Fury” with their sigil being a black stag. A stag is not an animal I would choose to describe House Baratheon. Going by the puppetry they underwent, in the incestual festival going right under the nose of the Ruler of the Seven Kingdoms (who was a Baratheon himself), they were quite a weak house since the beginning and owed all their accolades to someone else.

The founder of House Baratheon is Orys Baratheon, who was a general in King Aegon’s army. It was a rumour that Orys was of the Targaryen ancestral, he may even be a bastard half-brother of Aegon Targaryen. Orys conquered Storm’s End by defeating Argilac, the Arrogant. He also took Argilac’s daughter as his wife.

However, the glory days started when the great (sleeping and eating) King Robert Baratheon rose through his rebellion. Ned Stark’s sister, Jon Snow’s supposed mother, and Rhaegar Targaryen’s love interest Lyanna Stark was promised to Robert Baratheon. But fate had a different story to tell. There are two major theories here. The abduction of Lyanna by Rhaegar is one theory, which portrays Rhaegar as a tormentor. While the other theory is that they were both in love. ‘The Tower of Joy’ was their safe house, where they had a decent amount of ‘joy’ and it led to the birth of their alleged son, Jon Snow. The common thing in both situations is the disappearance of Rhaegar and Lyanna.

A worried Benjen Stark (Brother of Ned Stark) went to King’s Landing to the Targaryens, with accusations and hopes to bring his sister back. He and his father Lord Rickard Stark were taken prisoners and killed on the command of King Aerys Targaryen. At this time, Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon were in Vale. Jon Arryn of Vale was instructed to have their heads submitted to the king. Arryn refused to do so and raised his banner. This started a war, which later became famous as Robert’s rebellion.

The allies, House Stark, Tully and Arryn led the rebellion. Robert and his alliances defeated the Targaryen army at the Battle of Trident. However, the Lannister forces took hold of King’s Landing. Jaime Lannister slew the King and Robert Baratheon emerged as the King of the Seven Kingdoms.

His elder brother Stannis and Renly were the Lords of Dragonstone and Storm’s end respectively. Robert married Cersei and it was not the best of marriages. This was because of Robert’s whoring and abuse. Cersei’s hatred followed. The incest played the better part of it. Robert did not die a glorious death. A wound during his boar hunt caused it.

Robert’s (on paper) eldest son, Joffrey Baratheon was crowned as the king. Word started to spread about Joffrey being a result of incest which resulted in the outbreak of War of the Five Kings. Stannis declared himself as the true heir, being the eldest brother of Robert. Renly ignored all the succession laws and gathered his own army for the war. His wife was Margaery Tyrell. However, he truly loved and had sexual relations with her brother- Loras Tyrell. A shadow with the face of Stannis killed Renly which was a very theatric death. Renly’s most loyal guard, Briennne of Tarth was furious at Stannis. Renly’s campaign ended there.

Stannis continued his march in the war, with an alliance of some major forces and his army, Stannis Baratheon took on the Lannisters in the Battle of Blackwaters where he had a massive defeat by the smart tactic employed by the (my favourite) imp. If it was not for the wildfire, Stannis would surely have emerged out as victorious, with the Onion Knight by his side.

Stannis was giving some really powerful vibes. His badass encounter with the Night’s Watch is my personal favourite. Of all the Baratheons, Stannis impresses me the most. Except for a few things like burning his own daughter, and losing the battle, Stannis really fills in the spot of my 11th most favourite GOT character. (It is a joke) Unfortunately, Brienne of Tarth killed him during the war. Thus ended the last known, legitimate Baratheon. (Joffrey, Myrcella, Tommen are all kids born of incest).

But wait, the Baratheons are not over. Remember Gendry? The bastard of Robert Baratheon? He is on a boat since season 3. Let’s hope he comes back and revives House Baratheon! After all, yours is the fury.
