Cleopatra and Marc Antony

Cleopatra and Marc Antony

He said that he loved her

But he was married, was this okay?

He did seem to love her though

And she too felt that way

Of course, there was an uproar

For he was a King among men

Who was courting a foreign Queen

And so, ignoring the one in his bed

But they had shut their ears

Who needs them open anyway?

His poor wife died

Conspicuously convenient

He was free to choose now

Free to choose her

Yet, he signed a political alliance

With his marriage certificate

He hadn’t chosen her

And she looked on, horrified

At his hands that were tied

To his brother-in law’s vision

As he made love to a political ally

Then, after agony and heartache

Anger and weakness

Stern negotiation and political blindfolding

They found themselves together again

This time they married

He would soon divorce the other

But first he’d set out on a conquest

That would bring glory like no other

After months of waiting, the news arrived

They had lost and he was haggard

She immediately sailed to him with help

And whatever she could offer

Her doctors helped his dying men

Treating ugly wounds by the minute

They roused the blackened and bruised bodies

As she slowly fixed his spirit

Now, she was to sail back south again

And he was soon to follow

But the night before she did set sail

A letter left her hollow

His ‘wife’ was bringing help

For which he’d have to sail north

He desperately needed rations

And it was more than she had brought

Needless to say it was out

Out in the open to see

An offer that would help him

Better serve the country

Although it stank of politics

It seemed the right thing to do

She left him with the choice

Of who he’d like to choose

It had to be his choice

She shouldn’t tell him what to do

And after three months of waiting

She received a letter saying, ‘Darling, I’m coming to you.’
